San Basilio de Palenque, a place of immense cultural and historical significance, is recognized as the first free community in the Americas and a vibrant hub of Afro-Colombian traditions.

FACTS

  • Location: San Basilio de Palenque is located in the northwest of Colombia, in the Bolívar Department, about 50 km from Cartagena.  

  • History: Palenque was founded in the 17th century and was the first free African village in the Americas.

  • Population: The village has about 3,000 to 4,000 inhabitants, mostly of African descent.  

  • UNESCO World Heritage: San Basilio de Palenque was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003.

  • Culture: Palenque is known for its own language, music, dances, and Afro-Colombian heritage.
